Cubs, City Hall expected to reach Wrigley deal by Monday

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Cubs home opener is just four days away and it appears a deal on renovations inside the park could be reached before then.

Sources close to the Cubs say that a deal is close to being finalized that would allow for electronic signs in left and right field, but details are still being worked out. And a source with the rooftop owners says if the size of the signs violates the current agreement it will be challenged in court.

"I think the renovations will improve the whole atmosphere of the game, the stadium is iconic," says Cubs fan Huran Pitter. "It's actually a landmark but I think the improvements would help bring more business, but not just that, but update the stadium itself."

The sticking point remains the size of the electronic signs that Cubs' owners want to put inside the park. The Ricketts family wants a jumbotron scoreboard out in left field and another sign in right, which would generate more revenue.

But those additions could have an impact on the views of the rooftop owners, who still have 11 years left on their revenue sharing deal with the team.

A source connected with the rooftop owners says any deal between the Cubs and City Hall that would impact the rooftop views will be challenged in court.

Die-hard fans remain skeptical about major changes to the 99-year-old stadium.

"I'm a bit skeptical about that, I like the subtleties they've done, with the smaller LED boards, the one in right field, is a proposed one gonna go up, in left field as well, something big, though that would be blocking what is considered the old Budweiser building, me as a purist, I'm kinda against that," Cubs fan Nathan Snead says.

The Rickett's would be privately funding the improvements which includes $300 million to renovate the park, and another $200 million for a nearby hotel.

"I love it the way it is, but I guess it's up to them," says Cubs fan Cricket Baylor.

"It's perfect the way it is," says fan Andrew King. "I mean, they can do a little brush up, but you don't need jumbotrons, you don't need that, pay attention to the game."
