Switching problems lead to `major delays` on Loop `L` trains

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Switching problems at a busy CTA elevated train junction in the Loop led to delays on a handful of "L" train lines throughout and past the morning rush Thursday.

The "major" delays were experienced by CTA riders throughout the morning on the Brown, Green, Orange, Purple and Pink lines, CTA rider alerts said. They were caused by switching problems at the Lake/Wells Junction, according to the CTA.

The trouble stemmed from "a computer issue with signaling," CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said. This meant the CTA had to switch to manual signaling around Control Tower 18, one of its busiest intersections, and the fact that this occurred during the morning rush only exacerbated the problem.

In addition to the delays experienced by riders on those lines, Purple Line Express service was rerouted via the Outer Loop track (Brown Line Side) on the Loop "L," because of the track switching problems.

The issue was cleared up by about 11:15 a.m., Lukidis said.

She noted that the issue was not related to work being done on the Wells Street bridge, as it was not a track issue but a computer issue that affected signaling.
