Dance scholarship for boys named after famous valley performer

PHOENIX -

There's a new scholarship for young men in the valley who are passionate about dance.

David Hallberg, who the scholarship is named after, is a famous dancer and a valley resident--he trained at Ballet Arizona in Phoenix.

Ballet Arizona is where dreams of dance have come true.

"Flooded with memories...I really burned the midnight oil training with my teacher right outside the studio and it's great being back, you know, there's no place like home," said Hallberg.

But "home" for David Hallberg wasn't always an easy place to be as a male dancer in a predominately female industry.

"I was bullied a lot in Phoenix. I went to public high school and it was really difficult," said Hallberg.

"Had I not had the environment I had at Ballet Arizona and the training I had at Ballet Arizona, I don't know where I would've been," said Hallberg.

Ballet Arizona is a school of dance, but also a safe haven, a place where David found his footing.

With the creation of the David Hallberg Scholarship, other boys who may be in the same position can have the same opportunity.

"This scholarship serves as an outlet for young boys who are being bullied, but they love to dance. I was in their shoes," said Hallberg.

"Looking at the bullies or looking at the detractors and saying, 'Listen, I love this. I have a passion for it. I hopefully have a little talent and I'm gonna go forth and follow my dreams'," said Hallberg.

For boys and young men in the valley who want to dance but something is getting in the way, be it bullies or you don't have the financial means, the David Hallberg Scholarship could be just what you're looking for.

"If you have this desire to train and to see if you like dance, or to check things out, it's a great opportunity," said Hallberg.
