Hoboken mayor frustrated by old water contract

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

After Hoboken, N.J., suffered several ruptures water mains recently, Mayor Dawn Zimmer is blaming the city's aging water infrastructure. She said it desperately needs to be updated, but a 19-year-old contract with United Water Company is preventing that.

Zimmer said a prior administration entered into the agreement with United Water in 1994 to help plug budget gaps. The city has gotten $13 million out of the deal. However, the agreement extends through 2024, and the mayor said that is financially hurting the city. She said the contract is "unbelievably shortsighted" and delayed infrastructure improvements in favor of plugging budget gaps, the AP reported.

She wants to buy out the agreement and renegotiate with the water company.

But United Water issued a statement saying it is not interested in a buyout and that it would like to talk with the mayor to "set forth a comprehensive capital improvement plan."
