Bob Sirott`s One More Thing about opening day

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Onemore thing, about baseball's opening day.

The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again. That's probably why--whether you root for the Chicago team that's 35 blocks south, or 36 blocks north--the start of the baseball season is about more than a game.

It's the appeal of a fresh start, another chance. Like the field itself before a game, on opening day, everything is perfect, the slate is clean; at least until the games begin. When baseball comes back, even on a cold April day, we feel like we're finally done with winter. Our thoughts turn to summer and the glorious, warm, fun days and nights that await. It's why as kids many of us were so excited the night before opening day, we could barely sleep. Our feelings about this day have roots in our childhood.

As former baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti wrote: "Much of what we love later in a sport is what it recalls to us about ourselves at our earliest. Memories of our best hopes."

We hoped the school bell would ring in time for us to run home in time to see Jack Brickhouse or Harry Caray and the end of the game. And if our team won, like today, then we knew this would be the year. Again.
