DETROIT (WJBK) -

34-year-old Clifton Whatley denies he ran a criminal enterprise, but published reports by investigators tell a very different story about this Detroit Police Officer.

Investigators say he enlisted the help of his nephews,  Raymond Whatley Jr. and Eric Reed as well as friend Layman Armstrong to orchestrate armed robberies and terrorize employees at
'Check and Go' stores in Taylor, Melvindale and Harper Woods, a 'Cash Advance" in Westland
and a 'Family Dollar Store' in Canton

Whatney is accused of using his training and experience as a law enforcement officer to build his criminal enterprise and operate that enterprise without detection for a one year period.

Investigators say from may of 2012 through march of 2013, he used his training as a police officer to commit the crimes, even  providing his co-defendants with a handgun.

Prosecutors say he recruited, trained and provided direct instructions to his nephew in connection with planning and carrying out the multitude of armed robberies.

They portray Whatley as a criminal rather than a cop. Whatley, a security guard to gangster rapper Rick Ross is deemed by the courts a danger and a flight risk and remains jailed on one million dollar bond.
