Brooklyn doctor indicted in liposuction death

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

A grand jury has indicted a Brooklyn doctor on a manslaughter charge after he did liposuction on a patient who had previously had a heart transplant.

Dr. Oleg Davie also faces criminally negligent homicide and other charges in the death of Isel Pineda, District Attorney Charles J. Hynes said.

Doctors are discouraged from performing liposuction on patients with heart disease, Hynes said. He alleged that Davie "recklessly" performed the procedure and falsified forms to conceal his knowledge of Pineda's medical history.

She went into cardiac arrest in his office after the May 2012 procedure and died at Coney Island hospital.

The New York City Department of Health has issued an alert after two babies were diagnosed with neonatal herpes this month after undergoing a ritual Jewish circumcision called metzitzah b'peh.  In this type of circumcision the mohel sucks blood directly from the infant's cut penis.  The infants need to be hospitalized and treated with intravenous acyclovir.

NYPD probing raising of white flags at Brooklyn Bridge

The NYPD is investigating a major security breach at the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the most highly secured landmarks in New York City. Two white flags — international symbols of surrender — fluttered from poles on the stone supports that hold cables above the bridge connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. The flags had a faint appearance of the stars and stripes. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appeared to have been removed.
