DETROIT (WJBK) -

As Detroit's new emergency financial manager takes the reigns, young adults with a vested interest in the city are concerned about the future.  However, the governor wants them to know they can be part of the change and the solution.

Detroit Young Professionals is a nonprofit made up of people who could take their education, skills and talents to any city in the county, but they have chosen Detroit.  They are determined to play a big part in the city's future.

"There's a lot of looking back, and we want to look forward," said Karissa Holmes.

That is exactly why the Detroit Young Professionals invited Governor Snyder to a town hall meeting Monday evening, the same day Emergency Financial Manager Kevyn Orr took on the massive task of getting this city back on track.  He was in the audience listening as the moderator peppered the governor with questions.

These young Detroiters are demanding answers because they want to help build a stronger city, one that will attract young people, not push them away.

"As long as I've been living in Detroit, it's been the same conversations happening over and over again," Holmes said.  "[There are] so many different layers of bureaucracy.  There's confusion about the next steps.  So we are asking for just some clarity on how to do some basic functions within the city."

The governor and the new EFM say they are listening, but this group is expecting a lot more than a sympathetic ear.  They are calling for change in the city they call home.

"They've got the fire, the passion, the energy to solve a tremendous amount of problems," said Snyder.

"He understands that we want to be a part of the new Michigan, we want to be part of the new Detroit, and he's offering us a seat at the table," said Holmes.

"They have so many good ideas, and they are so committed to this city.  They're really a model," said Orr.
