FOX Confidential: The Hagan Family's Search for Justice

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It is hard for Mike and Carol Hagan of Pennsauken to look at pictures of their 32-year-old son Michael, and remember the happier, normal times.  Happiness and normal haven't existed ever since he was gunned down last summer in Philadelphia's Society Hill section.

"When that happens it just knocks you down," Mike Hagan told FOX Confidential.  "It's terrible."

Mike Hagan said he was watering the flowers in his yard on the morning of July 1 2012 when two police officers got out of an unmarked police car to deliver news that would change the lives in his family forever.

They said "are you Mr. Hagan?" I said, "Yeah." "Do you have a son Michael?" I said, "Yeah."  He said, "Well he died of a gunshot wound last night."  I said, "How am I going to tell my wife about this?"

Life then became suspended for the family.

The young, brilliant senior-level  IT consultant for major accounting firm Grant Thorton lost his life at the hands of a faceless-figure, that would be hunted by the Philadelphia Police Department for eight months and counting.

The Fishtown resident and Drexel University graduate had his whole life ahead of him.  Instead he was taken away with a bullet to the chest at 4th and Lombard Streets in an apparent robbery as his wallet was taken.

The family believes he was simply on his way home after an evening on the town with friends.  They say he might have been helping a friend that passed out when the incident took place.

Police have had a hard time finding witnesses to the crime.  The family said the city did not have working surveillance cameras that could have caught the incident, serving as the best witness of all.

The Investigation

Sgt. Robert Kuhlmeier with the Philadelphia Homicide Division's Special Investigation Unit said they continue to check robbery patterns in the area of 4th and Lombard that could provide clues into who robbed and possibly killed Michael.  They are also checking people arrested for gun crimes in the area.  Ballistics from the crime scene also have Philadelphia cops working with Camden County authorities on the investigation, but the connection there is not clear.

As of now, they have nothing.

"At this point in the investigation the leads have been very thin," Kuhlmeier said.

"We need to talk to people.  People may have seen something they don't realize and it may be the piece we need to, you know, put this puzzle together," he added.

In the meantime the Hagans have installed posters on SEPTA lines announcing a $50,000 reward for information that leads to a suspect and conviction in Michael's murder.  They are similar to flyers that have been seen all across the city since the crime took past last July. A billboard is also coming soon.

For the time being, the Hagans continue to find some peace in their faith, and knowing Michael's life may have been short on Earth, but it made a difference.

"Just a good generous heart and so many friends of his, our family; we've all been robbed from his goodness, his kindness.  He had so much more good to give this world," Carol Hagan said.
