PHOENIX -

Imagine being separated from the love of your life and then reuniting with that person years later. Ruth and Gene's love story shows that love can conquer anything!

The flowers and decorations are up.

Ruth Stevens is ready to exchange vows with her soon to be husband, but this is no ordinary wedding.

The 88-year-old is marrying the love of her life after not seeing him for over 60 years.

"Gene and I were high school sweethearts and his mother felt we were getting too serious so she broke us up," said Ruth.

Ruth and Gene went their separate ways.

They married and had their own families, but didn't know anything about each other until their 60th high school reunion.

Ruth's husband had past away and Gene's wife was sick at the time, but they kept in touch.

"We talked for 10 years and we know something was cooking, but you know we weren't in a position to do anything," said Ruth.

Gene's wife passed away and the two were left alone. The high school sweethearts kept in touch and their live started to blossom.

"We fell in love again..what we had when we were 16, it just blossomed all over again and it wasn't companionship.. was love, just wanting to be together, wanting to see each other and be with each other," said Ruth.

Ruth and Gene know their love is meant to be, so they decided to spend the rest of their lives together.

We asked Ruth if she ever wonders what would have happened if she was never separated from Gene.

"I don't long over it," she said.  "I mean I don't lament at this point because God knows and God's in control."

Ruth's son is marrying his mother to her high school sweetheart.  Their story proves that true love endures.

The happy couple is tying the knot on Saturday and then they're heading out to Sedona for their honeymoon.
