Barges arriving as work on new Tappan Zee begins

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Work on replacing the Tappan Zee Bridge is about to begin.

Six barges and tugboats carrying construction equipment will begin arriving next week.

Darrell Waters, the president of Tappan Zee Constructors, said Thursday the barges will be among 50 to 60 that will arrive in coming months. At the peak of construction there will be 100 barges.

Newsday Westchester says Waters told Rockland business executives "we're starting the mobilization of our fleet of equipment."

He said the barges will aid with soil sampling in the river. The work will become more evident once crews begin sinking piles by early summer.

By August, Waters said, crews will begin dredging 900,000 cubic yards of sediment from the river. And by fall, 1 of the world's largest floating cranes will arrive.
