NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Plainclothes police officers conducting a buy and bust operation in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn shot a 20-year-old man who opened fire on them, according to police.

Shaquile Reid was struck once in the right hand on Thursday evening near Livonia Avenue and Grafton Street. Earlier reports of Reid being hit in various areas of his body were in inaccurate, said police.

The officers initially approached Reid with their badges visible after seeing him pull out a handgun while chasing three other men. That's when he fired at the officers, said police. They returned fired unloading three rounds.

Witnesses told police they heard officers order Reid to 'stop' and 'get down,' said police.

A Colt 45 caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.

Reid was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.

The two officers were treated at Kings County Hospital for tinnitus.

The NYPD says the officers had stopped to question Reid about another shooting.

He faces various charges including criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.
