HINSDALE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A man in his early 40s was struck by a train and killed Monday afternoon near the West Hinsdale station.
"So far we haven't found his ID," said Hinsdale Police Chief Bradley Bloom.
The man was walking north across tracks, at Stough Avenue, when he was struck by an eastbound express train, Bloom said. The incident occurred at about 3 p.m.
Passengers were still on the train that struck the pedestrian as of 4 p.m.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was on its way to Union Station in Chicago at the time, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said.
All inbound and outbound trains on the BNSF line were stopped on the approach to Hinsdale. By 3:50 p.m., Metra opened one track and started to run trains slowly through the area.
Metra is reported delays from 90-120 minutes as a result of the incident.
Metra is urging passengers to stay downtown Chicago or consider using the Union Pacific West line out of Ogilvie Transportation Center, or seek other modes of transportation.
