CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 15-year-old girl was fatally wounded when shots were fired into a home in south suburban Calumet City Sunday night.
Ashaya Miller was with a 19-year-old man in the kitchen area of a home in the 500 block of Ingraham Avenue in Calumet City about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when someone came into the gangway and fired shots into a window, Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore said.
Miller was shot twice in the back, Gilmore said. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she died at 11:13 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The man who was with her in the kitchen was struck in the elbow and was also taken to Christ Medical Center for treatment.
A Monday autopsy found Miller died of multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
There were about 10 people, including an adult resident, in the home at the time, Gilmore said. The people inside weren't there for a party or similar gathering, but they were just visiting with each other.
The shooting occurred less than two miles from the girl's home in Hammond, Ind. At this point in the investigation it did not appear as though the girl was the intended target, Gilmore said.
"We're following every possible lead that we can." Gilmore said.
Calumet City police are being assisted by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, and a search warrant was carried out at another location for evidence, but no one is in custody, Gilmore said.
