NYC weekend events

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

You know there are always a lot of things to do in the city, but this weekend a lot is on tap: Big East college basketball, the famed St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the New York City Half Marathon.

While the barricades are in place along Fifth Avenue, the St. Patrick's festivities were already underway Friday night with the 229th Friendly Sons of St. Patrick's dinner in Midtown.

As the parade and partying wind down Saturday, running enthusiasts will take over the streets Sunday morning for the NYC Half, the first major big race in the city since the full marathon was canceled last November because of Superstorm Sandy. The NYC Half Expo was already underway Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Making New York City more energy efficient

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.

When he's not slaying three-headed beasts with his olive-wood club, Hercules carves out time for the little people. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson treated fans from the Harlem Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC to an advance screening of his new film. I caught up with the larger-than-life action hero after the big surprise.

Believe it or not this, some say New York's outdoor basketball courts are a dying entity. Even Rucker Park in Harlem -- where Dr. J and countless others honed their skills -- used to be standing room only all times of the day. Now there's plenty of room to stand on most days.Basketball programs like one at Chelsea Piers are gaining popularity. That means the place to hoop it up for many appears to be indoors.

How Mets and Yankees can improve or contend in 2014

    Monday, July 21 2014 9:55 PM EDT2014-07-22 01:55:20 GMT
With the All-Star break over and the second half of the MLB season well underway, the New York Mets (46-52 as of July 20) and the New York Yankees (50-47 as of July 20) find themselves in the same situations each team is accustomed to at this time of the season. The Yankees are in the middle of the AL East Division title while the Mets are scrapping for every win possible to stay relevant in the NL East. But while the record says one thing, reality says another.
