Despite progress, MTA still faces challenges and criticism

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

With fanfare, MTA executives and Bronx politicians swiped into the newly renovated West 180th Street subway station. Once an eyesore, the station is now pleasant for commuters after a $66 million restoration

But even here commuter perception of the MTA is bad.

Riders cite delays, higher fares, construction service changes, broken escalators at the 59th Street-Lexington Avenue subway and Metro North's 47th Street and Park Avenue, and more.

Commuter advocates praise some of the progress made on the infrastructure through FastTrack, capital projects such as the Second Avenue subway, the installation of countdown clocks. But they question the annual $3 billion debt payment portion of the MTA's $12 billion budget and the constant fare increases.
