NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A Greyhound bus heading to New York City from Atlantic City was infested with cockroaches and had to pull over to the side of the road Friday.

Riders said the roaches were falling from the ceiling and crawling out of the upholstery. Some passengers posted photos of the roaches on social media sites.

"Once the driver became aware of the situation, the driver followed procedures by pulling the bus over to a safe location and notifying our dispatch office," Greyhound said in a statement. "A second bus was immediately sent to pick up those passengers and continue their travel into New York."

Greyhound said it had apologized to the 48 passengers and gave them refunds.

"Currently, our team is investigating the situation and working to determine its cause," the bus company said.
