NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY) -- Ridgewood High School students and parents this week received a letter saying that an undisclosed number of underage teens at the school have taken nude pictures of themselves and sent them to other students using SnapChat, an application that allows you to send and control how long someone else can view a picture.
But in this case, school officials said that students used the application to send nude pictures of themselves, sort of an online way of flashing someone.
Then a receiving student apparently took a quick screen shot of the photos and and posted them on the photo-sharing website Instagram.
Because the students' nude photos were of underage teens, Ridgewood police are investigating the possible possession and transmission of child pornography.
Ridgewood public schools superintendent Daniel Fishbein said the district is working with local authorities to get to the bottom of this.
Authorities are giving teens an amnesty period until Monday, March 18, 2013, to delete the photos. After that, any student who is found to have created, transmitted or possessed an illegal photo could face serious charges, Fishbein said.
