Man with semi-automatic handgun fatally shot by police

Chicago police shot and killed a 58-year-old man early Thursday after he exited a bathroom in a Garfield Park apartment and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at them, authorities said.

John Harris died in a West Side apartment above Three Brothers Food Mart at 2:45 a.m. -- about 30 minutes after the shooting occurred, authorities said.

Officers were called to the apartment in the 200 block of North Homan Avenue after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance involving a "man with a gun," according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Police say Harris' girlfriend, who lives at the apartment, met officers on the street and waved them off. But before they left, a woman believed to be the girlfriend's daughter, told police that Harris was in the apartment with a gun, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.

When officers entered the apartment, Harris allegedly exited the bathroom and aimed the gun at them, Camden said.

When Harris did not drop the weapon, as instructed, police fired, said Camden, adding that none of the officers were injured. Police recovered two weapons from the apartment.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which examines all police-involved shootings, is investigating the man's death.
