DETROIT (AP) -

The older brother of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he's considered and rejected the idea of running for the Michigan Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Carl Levin in 2014.

The 71-year-old Scott Romney says he seriously thought about seeking the seat. But he tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/YYJ34P) that he quickly concluded the timing wasn't right.

Romney says he's happy with his life. He also says he's confident a Republican can win the race for the seat that Levin first won 34 years ago.

The 78-year-old Levin announced Thursday that he won't seek re-election.

Scott Romney's ex-wife Ronna ran for the Senate in 1996 but lost to Levin.

Scott and Mitt Romney's father George served as Michigan's governor and sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1968.
