House OKs barring student fee use for politics

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Student groups won't be able to use student fees collected by universities to support political causes under a bill passed by the Arizona House.

The bill by Republican Rep. John Kavanagh was prompted by an Arizona State University students' group that supported Proposition 204 in November. The proposition would have extended a temporary 1 cent sales tax and directed the money to education. The Arizona Students' Association spent $122,000 to support the proposition.

Kavanagh contends it's wrong for student fees to be used for politics. Democrats argued that's always been the groups' mission.

The bill passed Monday on a 35-24 party-line vote.

The Arizona Board of Regents made the $2 fee student voluntary after complaints from some students. The student group sued, claiming their free speech rights were being infringed.
