Switch problems caused morning delays on two Metra lines

Signal and switch problems on two Metra lines Thursday morning caused many commuters to get to their destinations nearly a half-hour late.
The problems affected the Milwaukee District/North and Union Pacific/Northwest lines and had been resolved by about 10:15 a.m., according to Metra.
There was "a switch issue at Mayfair," which is on the city's Northwest Side in the Jefferson Park neighborhood, Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. This caused some delays of trains on the Milwaukee District/North line.
A similar issue at Lake Street in downtown Chicago affected Union Pacific/Northwest Line trains, Miller said.
Several trains on these two lines were delayed, some of them up to about 30 minutes, Miller said.
One exception was Milwaukee District/North Line Train No. 2109, an outbound train that was scheduled to arrive at Fox Lake at 10:12 a.m., but was operating 40 to 50 minutes behind schedule, according to a Metra rider alert.
By about 10:15 a.m. the switch and signal problems had been resolved and Metra trains were back on schedule.
