House limits service times for photo tickets

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona House is making it harder for process servers to find people who are avoiding photo enforcement tickets.

The House voted 46-13 Wednesday to limit the hours documents can be served. If the Senate also passes the bill and it is signed by the governor, summons' can only be personally served from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bill sponsor Rep. Steve Smith of Maricopa has argued that he's received complaints from constituents who have been scared by servers pounding on doors late at night.

Although drivers receiving photo enforcement tickets are initially notified by mail, if they ignore the notice they must be personally served if a case is to be pursued.

The bill doesn't change rules on when process servers can serve any other type of judicial notice.
