Motorist wakes up on Indiana expressway, leads police on chase

GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
An alleged drunken driver led police on a 3-mile chase Tuesday morning in northwest Indiana before his arrest.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Ann Wojas said Ted E. Compton, 38, of Lake Village, was sleeping in his 2003 Ford Taurus at 12:19 a.m. when Sgt. Wanda Clay and saw his car in a triangular area on the Borman Expressway between the right lane of the expressway and the Burr Street entrance ramp. Compton was asleep and his car engine was running.
Trooper Brian Rubesha knocked on the window to awaken him and Compton put the car in gear and took off. Police pursued him for 3 miles until Compton exited at Grant Street in Gary, Ind., and pulled over onto the shoulder.
Compton was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail.
He's facing three felonies -- operating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and being an habitual traffic violator, police said.
