There is a glimmer of hope tonight that the Detroit City Council and Governor Snyder may be able to avoid an emergency manager for the city by hammering out a new consent agreement.
The notion was discussed behind closed doors yesterday but it was out in the open today at the State Capitol in Lansing.
State Treasurer Andy Dillon was at the State Capitol to meet with members of the Detroit Legislative Delegation to keep the dialogue going.
On Monday that dialogue included Snyder, Dillon and several Detroit City Council members.
The idea of working out another consent agreement was brought up. The Governor and the treasurer did not say yes, but they didnt say no either.
Asked if the idea is in play and Dillon says it's too soon to say, but he won't say 'never.'
Mr. Dillon's meeting with the Detroit lawmakers was to explain why the EM might be needed
and the message from the Detroit legislators was clear
State representatives David Nathan (D-Detroit_ and Bert Johnson (D- Highland Park) say they do not want an EM.
The renewed interest in the new consent agreement may work.
How serious is the notion? Johnson says it very serious.
Governor Snyder is aware that the first consent deal did not solve the problem
Both he and Treasurer Dillon would want to see some tangible evidence it would work now.
For now there's a glimmer of hope the EM can be avoided.
