NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A hybrid wolf was returned to its owner Tuesday after it escaped from its yard in Rahway, New Jersey.

Authorities captured the wolf after it spent part of the day on Monday wandering along the streets of the northern New Jersey town.

Linden police say the wolf was one of three owned by a Rahway resident. The other two returned home after experiencing freedom.

Police tracked the wayward wolf on Monday, asking people not to chase or frighten the animal.

Eventually the wolf became tired and laid down.  It was taken by an animal control officer using a dog stick to an animal shelter, said Linden Police.

Detective Lt. James Sarnicki tells the Courier News of Bridgewater the wolf appeared docile and police don't believe the public was in any danger.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
