Dyer teen`s Blackhawks Facebook page skyrockets in popularity

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What started out as a whimsical creation on Facebook has unexpectedly changed this Dyer, Indiana teen's quiet life. High School senior Joel Miller is living out his dream as the ultimate Chicago Blackhawks fan.

Within just the past six weeks, Miller has gotten 131,000 people to like a Facebook page called "I bet the Blackhawks can get 1 million fans before any other NHL team!"

Miller never expected the page to get as big as it has. He's even making some money on the side because sports companies are coming to him with offers.

"It is absolutely nuts," Miller said. "People are contacting me and I'm just going crazy, like emailing people back. I'm just some 18-year-old kid, and all these companies are wondering how it got started and all this stuff."

Most are surprised to find out that this high school senior is the administrator behind this incredibly popular Blackhawks fan page. He started it when he was just 15 years old, and it already has significantly more likes than nearly all the other Hawks fan pages out there.

"I went to once Blackhawks game on Jan. 14, 2010 and they won 3-0," Miller said. "I got home, so pumped and made this Facebook page. Then it blew up from there."

The Lake Central High senior said thousands of people were "liking" his page each week. Once the delayed NHL season got underway in January of 2013, there has been a frenzy of activity. The Facebook page gained at least 20,000 since Jan. 19, the first day of play.

Miller is a bona-fide fan. His room is filled with Blackhawks memorabilia, including a stack of team shirts, a life-size poster of his favorite player and a team blanket and pillow he sleeps with every night.

Recently, several sports companies have reached out to Miller. They are now paying the teen to advertise their products on his Facebook wall.

"I love doing this. It's just crazy because I just love the Hawks," Miller said. "I'm just posting what I love and what I love to watch. Then I'm getting extra out of it, so it's a bonus."

Ironically, Miller has only been to one game. He said he can't afford to go to more. But he's always excited to watch the games from his living room couch, updating the Facebook page.

"I sit there with my laptop watching game," Miller said.

Life is good for this young fan. But there's just one more thing that will make it even better.

"The main goal is to win the Stanley Cup," Miller said. "That is obviously main goal."

Miller will attend Liberty University in Virginia this fall, and he hopes to study marketing - a field he is already excelling in thanks to his Chicago Blackhawks Facebook page.
