DETROIT (WJBK) -
Matt Cowan was involved in an accident Tuesday that, at first, seemed to be going by the book. All three drivers involved in the crash at Jefferson and Lycaste in Detroit stopped and started exchanging their information, but the second the word police was brought up it quickly turned.
"His car was really damaged, so he wasn't able to take off fast," Cowan said. "It was smoking, so I was able to take a picture of him in the car, the license plate, as well, and then he took off."
Cowan went from accident victim to investigator by taking as many pictures as possible. He even got shots of where the silver Jaguar that he says caused the wreck ended up after a witness told him where it was spotted.
"Once we knew the police weren't coming, I drove down and took a photo of the Jaguar in front of this house with the address," Cowan explained.
He says when he contacted the Detroit Police Department, two different officers acted like they didn't care.
Cowan says he understands that this wasn't a murder, but it was still a crime, and he believes not following up is sending the wrong message to a city in dire straits.
Detroit police tell us they are now looking into Cowan's claims.
"If something like this isn't cared about and people in the city know they can get away with something like this, what else do they know they can get away with?" said Cowan.
Cowan did turn over pictures of the silver Jaguar, as well as the license plate number to his insurance company, which will conduct its own investigation in hopes of tracking down the driver.
Cowan also filed a complaint with the Detroit Police Department concerning the matter.
