CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
February of 2013 will go down as the 17th snowiest on record in Chicago after 16.1 inches of snow fell.
This is 7.0 inches above normal and made up 82% of our total snowfall for the entire season so far. 2.96 inches of precipitation was recorded for the month, which is 1.17 inches above normal.
Even though our seasonal snowfall to date of 19.6 inches is roughly 10 inches below normal, Chicago is more than 3 inches above normal in terms of total precipitation since December 1st. This is important in terms of drought as we head into the warmer months of late spring and early summer.
The average high temperature was 33.1 degrees which is 2.2 degrees below normal. The average low temperature was 19.1 degrees which is 1.0 degree below normal.
Therefore, the average temperature for the month was 26.1 degrees which is 1.6 cooler than normal. The last February that was cooler than normal was back in 2008.
The long range forecast for March was just released by NOAA's Climate Prediction Center on February 28, 2013. It calls for temperatures to be near normal along with precipitation. Last march went down as the warmest on record with eight days in the 80s, but at least we received over 2 inches of rain.
