Student who shot self at school faces new charge

ATLANTA -

The Grady High School student who shot herself in the leg while on campus Wednesday will spend another night in jail.

Morgan Tukes is charged with carrying weapons within a school safety zone, reckless conduct, possession of a pistol by a minor and disruption of a public school after gun which she was carrying went off and shot her in her leg.

Tukes appeared before a Fulton County magistrate judge on Thursday. The judge set a $41,000 signature bond Thursday for the 17-year-old.

The judge also ordered Tukes to stay off the Grady High School campus. It was unclear if she would be allowed to attend another campus or an alternative school.

She also must stay away from any firearm and cannot have any in her home.

Tukes' mother, Kimberly Johnson, said that her daughter didn't know she was carrying a gun in her pocket. She said that her family doesn't have any guns in the house and she doesn't know where she got it from.

Her father told FOX 5 News after her court appearance that he wants to see his daughter go back to school and graduate.

However, Atlanta police filed a warrant for Tukes on Thursday related to an additional misdemeanor hit-and-run charge.  That charge happened in the McDonald's parking lot back in October on Ponce de Leon Avenue. A police report indicates a deputy asked Tukes to pull over after she allegedly hit a city vehicle.

Her parents said they are not familiar with the new charge and say they do not own the type of vehicle police say was involved in the accident.

Tukes went before another judge on Friday to answer charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction, fleeing and attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and reckless driving.
