Smith, Northeastern down Georgia State 90-84 in OT
ATLANTA (AP) - Joel Smith scored Northeastern's final seven points in overtime as the Huskies clinched their first outright conference title in more than two decades, defeating Georgia State 90-84 Wednesday night.
Northeastern (19-10, 14-3 Colonial Athletic Association) last won a regular-season title outright in 1990-91, when it won the North Atlantic Conference.
The Huskies led 83-82 in overtime until Smith's 3-pointer with 23 seconds to play. He added a key defensive rebound and four free throws in the waning seconds to wrap up the win.
The Panthers' Devonta White tied the game 72-72 with a layup at 1:15 of regulation. That score held until overtime.
The game was Georgia State's last in the CAA - the Panthers (15-16, 10-8) are leaving for the Sun Belt Conference.
Smith led Northeastern with 29 points and nine rebounds.
Manny Atkins had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers. White added 24 points.
