Bloomberg: Kelly win 'important' for gun control

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says former Illinois state Rep. Robin Kelly's primary win in the district once represented by Jesse Jackson Jr. is an important victory for "common sense leadership" on gun violence.

Bloomberg's PAC, Independence USA, poured more than $2 million into ads supporting Kelly and blasting former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who opposes an assault weapons ban.

In a Tuesday statement, Bloomberg says voters nationwide are demanding change from their leaders. Bloomberg launched his PAC weeks before the November election and spent more than $12 million to back candidates nationwide. That includes newly-elected Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod, a California Democrat who ousted an incumbent.

Kelly is expected to win the April 9 special election because the district is heavily Democrat.

Jackson resigned in November.
