AVON, N.J. (AP) — Environmental groups want one Jersey Shore town to drop its plan to use rain forest wood to rebuild its Sandy-damaged boardwalk.

Activists are calling on Avon, a small town next door to Belmar, to use something else other than ipe wood to rebuild its boardwalk.

If the town refuses, the groups plan to try to organize a boycott of Avon thus summer.

Tim Keating of Rainforest Relief says there are real questions about whether the wood was harvested responsibly and in a sustainable manner.

But Avon administrator Tim Gallagher says the town has already paid for the wood, which was cut and shipped to a warehouse in North Carolina and now awaits transportation to New Jersey.
