If you have kids in the Tempe School District, don't be surprised if you see more officers patrolling on or near school campuses.
Tempe officers have been asked to "adopt" the schools in their patrol areas.
That means they will spend more time on campus talking to principals, staff, and students.
They will also be on the lookout for drivers speeding through school zones.
Officers are also asking people who live by schools to be on alert.
"If you see any suspicious activity or see a child that could be in danger please call us right away, we'd rather have it be nothing than be a tragedy," said Tempe Police Sgt. Steve Carbajal.
Many Tempe schools already have a resource officer on campus, and the department hopes this new program will add to the students' safety.
