Alleged drunk driver drags officer with vehicle

PHOENIX -

A Phoenix Police officer is recovering after a suspected drunk driver dragged him with his vehicle early Sunday morning.

According to the officer, he was conducting an investigation on a driver who had just been pulled over for driving while impaired near 32nd Street and Indian School Road.

The driver decided to take off, but the officer wasn't about to let go--even when knocked unconscious.

Ed Sojourner started cleaning up early Sunday morning

"It was like a loud thunder," said Sojourner.

Shortly after midnight, Sojourner awoke to find a portion of his fence in pieces.

"I was kinda surprised, sound asleep," said Sojourner.

"All of the sudden I heard this huge boom," said Mike Squires, a witness.

The commotion startled other residents as well. Neighbors found quite a scene outside their front doors: flashing red and blue lights and suspects in handcuffs, including a man in his 30's who had just been pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence.

"During the course of that investigation, the individual that was being investigated ran back to his car, the officer followed. What proceeded after that was the officer holding onto the car as the driver drove down the road in an attempt to get away," said Lt. Mandy Faust with Phoenix Police.

According to Phoenix Police, the officer and the suspect were ejected, but not before the officer was dragged a few blocks.

During the attempted getaway, the suspect's vehicle hit a parked truck and slammed head-on into a palm tree.

"We heard the policemen yelling 'Don't you move, don't you move'," said Nancy White.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in cuffs and the officer was treated and released.

Sojourner, in the meantime, was grateful no one else was hurt and surprised the suspect found his way into this area.

"It's a very quiet neighborhood, I was really surprised," said Sojourner.

Police say the suspect, who has yet to be identified, will face serious charges when released from the hospital.

There was a passenger in the vehicle but at this point it doesn't appear that person will be charged.

The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
