CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A man was critically injured after he jumped in front of a CTA Red Line train at the Chicago Avenue station on the Near North Side Wednesday evening.
The southbound Red Line train struck the person at the station, in the 800 block of North State Street, CTA spokesman Brian Steele said.
The man jumped in front of the train as it approached the station just after 9 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Chicago Fire Department crews found him pinned under the train, and took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
He was "breathing and conscious" during the rescue effort, Steele said.
Police do not think any foul play was involved, Gaines said.
Southbound Red Line trains were temporarily rerouted to the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Chinatown/Cermak stations, but are returning to normal service as of about 11:45 p.m., the transit agency's website said.
Riders should leave extra time, as lingering delays are possible, the CTA said.
