CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A suspicious package at the Batavia post office Thursday morning led to the post office being evacuated and the street being closed to traffic for about two hours, until it was determined that the package was harmless and there was no threat posed by it.
About 5:20 a.m., police were notified of the package at the Batavia post office, 500 N. Randall Rd. in the west suburb, according to Batavia Police Deputy Chief Dan Eul.
The package caused concern for some people at the post office so as a precautionary measure the post office was evacuated and the road closed.
The Kane County Bomb Squad was called to the scene and the package was determined to be "just a package," Eul said. There was no threat received and it was determined that there was no danger posed by it. No one was injured in the incident, ether.
As another precautionary measure, police asked that media helicopters stay clear of the immediate area because there was a concern that the static electricity created by the blades could have presented an issue with a device, as well as if there was a detonation the helicopters could have been in an affected area.
The road and post office were both reopened between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m., Eul said.
