Two teenagers were killed when the SUV they rode in crashed into a tree Monday night in north suburban Antioch, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office.
The single-vehicle accident happened about 7 p.m. in the 27000 block of Wilmot Road, the sheriff's office said in a release.
The sheriff's office said the teens were in a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was traveling west on Wilmot Road just west of Lake Street when it went off the road and hit a tree. The tree was uprooted and partially landed on the car, the release said.
The driver, 16-year-old Joel Wittkamp of Antioch, and the passenger, 17-year-old Ashley Seay of Lindenhurst, were both dead at the scene.
Wittkamp was a well-liked Antioch High School junior who will be missed, and Lakes Community mourned Seay when they heard the news of her death at school on Tuesday.
The cause of the accident remained under investigation early Tuesday, the release said, but investigators believed weather conditions were a factor.
