MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi wants his old job back.

The Democrat told Newsday in an email on Tuesday that he plans to enter the race. He was narrowly defeated in 2009 by Republican Edward Mangano.

Suozzi said if elected he would restore "fiscal stability" to Nassau, which is under the control of a state agency. He said he would end "irresponsible borrowing and skyrocketing debt."

Mangano spokesman Brian Nevin said Suozzi was thrown out of office for hiking property taxes, spending too much "and leaving behind an utter mess."

In 2006, Suozzi lost to Eliot Spitzer in a gubernatorial primary. He was mentioned as a possible successor when Hillary Rodham Clinton resigned her Senate seat to become secretary of state. The job went to Kristen Gillibrand.
