Armed guards stationed in Weehawken schools

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (AP) - Armed guards have been stationed in Weehawken's three public schools in the wake of the Connecticut school killings.

School Superintendent Kevin McLellan tells The Jersey Journal retired police officers with concealed weapons are working in Roosevelt School and Webster School.

A police officer is present in Weehawken's high school for the start of classes, during lunch and at dismissal.

McLellan says the town is paying for the two retired officers. The school will pick up the expense in future budgets.

The increased security comes in response to the December shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 children and six educators were killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.
