ASU develops portable metabolism tracking technology

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Trying to lose weight? ASU students have invented something to help. This small device attaches to a smart phone -- you breathe into it -- and it reads your metabolism.

It also gives you suggestions on how to get healthy.

Lots of innovative research is underway at ASU, but one of the latest inventions by researchers there can turn your iPhone into a device that tracks your metabolism.

All you do is attach the device to your smart phone and blow into it.

"It's easy to use battery operated device that gives you detailed feedback about your own personal metabolism," said Chris McGriff, research assistant.

Developers say this is the world's first portable metabolism tracker.

Three years in the making, it's being launched by Breezing, a new startup company utilizing technology developed at ASU.

"If you have a smart phone and you're familiar with a smart phone user interface you can use Breezing," said Erica Forzani, Asst. Professor, ASU School of Engineering.

The device actually analyzes your exhaled breath, transmits the information to the app on your cell phone, then delivers a customized diet and exercise program.

"So Breezing is useful to give a personal snapshot of your own individual metabolism. It's useful to set a workout routine change your dietary intake and live a healthier lifestyle."

So the device tells you how fast you're burning calories, and gives you precise suggestions on what to eat and exercises to do to keep you healthy.

Developers want to bring it to the mass market thru the fundraising website IndieGoGo. The Breezing device is expected to be available to the public in May.
