PHILADELPHIA -

A 7-year-old found a gun inside his backpack Thursday during an after school program at the Universal Daroff Charter School.

Police tell FOX 29 the 7-year-old brought the bag to school administrators when the gun was discovered. While the gun was loaded, police say it was not operational.

Police say no one was injured and the school was never placed on lockdown.

In a statement, the school said the boy immediately notified a teacher.

"Staff immediately took possession of the bag and followed the emergency procedure to secure the students and staff," the statement read.

"The authorities were notified and arrived at the school and identified the item as a revolver and took over the investigation."
