DETROIT (WJBK) -
It's a problem that Fox 2 has been exposing for several years. Detroit's broken down ambulances are putting lives in jeopardy. City leaders tell us they're working to improve the system.
But residents say it's getting worse. Now the feds are now launching an investigation.
Check out Fox 2 Reporter Charlie LeDuff's exclusive report in the video player above.
Following Charlie's story, Fox 2 received a response from Dr. Jenny Atlas, Medical Director for Detroit East Medical Control Authority:
Statement from Jenny Atas, MD To Charlie LeDuff, Fox 2 News February 7, 2013
It is my great privilege and pleasure to work with the Detroit EMS as the Medical Director for Detroit East Medical Control Authority (MCA). It is my responsibility to ensure that the technicians are trained to deal with medical emergencies from broken ankles to heart attacks and serious trauma. In addition, it is the role of the MCA to develop and implement protocols to support these activities
I admire the strength Fire Commissioner Don Austin has shown in the face of the challenges regarding the EMS system. There are thousands of 911 calls each year in Detroit, and by law (EMS PA 368 of 1978) each and every one of these must be answered by an EMS unit, whether it is a major or minor issue. Does the need of Detroit EMS exceed their resources? Does EMS need more ambulances? Absolutely. Can they afford it? Not yet. Do they do their best to serve everyone who calls? Unconditionally
I encourage any discussion on the care of the patients served by Detroit EMS, and appreciate this opportunity for an open discussion.

Coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings has been equally breathless and embarrassing. Spot reports from media outlets who once prided themselves on accuracy and reliability have been little better than Twitter feeds.
