MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -
The youth-led social change event We Day is coming to Minnesota for the first time this year.
International charity and educational partner Free The Children brought 600 students together at Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis to announce the Oct. 8 concert event at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
The announcement came with a surprise special guest appearance by the Jonas Brothers!
The We Day Minnesota concert will pack 18,000 students into the X, but it's a super-exclusive guest list.
Students cannot buy a ticket to We Day -- they have to earn it by making a commitment to service for one local and one global action as part of the year-long We Act program.
From helping the homeless to fighting famine overseas, the second layer of We Act provides support and resources to help students start service projects, like the food drive Sid Paari and his classmates at St. Cloud Tech launched. Paari also earned a seat in Winnipeg last fall by helping with his uncle's water treatment plant in India.
We Act is a free, year-round educational program that helps students turn the inspiration of We Day into sustained social action. The ultimate goal is to raise a generation of active global citizens.
"When I was young, contributing to a better world was done by opening your parents' wallets. There wasn't a platform for young people to learn, grow and take action towards the issues they cared about," said Marc Kielburger, who co-founded Free The Children with his brother Craig in 1995. "That's what We Day is—a beginning to a year-long movement of young people taking positive actions in their lives. We are thrilled to bring We Day to Minnesota and provide young people with the platform to support them on their journey to change the world."
We Act will be open to Minnesota schools, starting immediately.
The We Day concert in October will bring the Jonas Brothers back to Minnesota, along with former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev and award-winning actress and activist Mia Farrow.
