A horrific crash took the lives of two Cobb County teenagers on Sunday. Investigators say the driver lost control of the car on Sandy Plains Road, hit a brick sign, and burst into flames.
A steady flow of people came to the site where two young men lost their lives. Many were crying and clinging to a friend as they looked at the smashed sign and charred car parts. For them, it was hard to believe 19-year-old Stephen Nolasco and 18-year-old Matt Bennett are gone.
"I lost somebody who was part of me. It's not going to be the same that's for sure," said Kleymer Alavera.
Cobb County investigators say Nolasco was driving, and his best friend Bennett was sitting next to him in the passenger seat when Nolasco lost control just after 3 a.m. and slammed into a brick sign on Sandy Plains Road.
Friends say they were heading home from a party, and were less than a half mile from home.
"When we heard the news, we didn't believe it. We had to come over here and see it," said friend Tonija Green.
Friends say the two teens were inseparable. After graduating from Sprayberry High School, both boys went to Georgia Perimeter College where they trained together for spring sports.
"They were two very good young men. To know that these families are devastated, it's hard to deal with. As a parent, I would never forget something like this, never recover from it," said parent Luis Berrios.
Cobb County police are looking into what exactly happened that caused the driver to lose control. While many people have already come here to see the crash site, a vigil is being planned for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation, and Cobb police ask anyone who may have information to call them at 770-499-3987.
