CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A suburban hospital is the first in the area to be recognized as the most baby friendly. Little Company of Mary Hospital earned the nod by ditching the canned formula.
Moms and babies gathered to discuss breastfeeding at Evergreen Park's Little Company of Mary.
"I use a pump and I have been pumping for him for 8 months," Melissa Trask said.
Trask and the rest of the ladies get together on a regular basis to socialize, to share tips about baby-raising and to talk about Mother Nature's natural elixir: breast milk.
It's no coincidence this group is here at Little Company - known as the baby hospital for Illinois for years now. Little company just received an accreditation as a baby-friendly birth facility by Baby-Friendly USA.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative was launched in 1991, but more hospitals have applied for the title in recent years.
That might be because hospitals appear to be less wary of the chief requirement - that they not accept free formula from makers - than they have been in past years, and because the designation might not be as costly as once thought.
Experts also said hospitals are catching up to research that shows breast-feeding has major benefits for mothers and newborns.
The American Academy of Pediatrics said infants who receive formula run a higher risk of getting childhood diseases, diabetes and childhood obesity. The organization said breast-feeding helps women reduce their chance of breast and ovarian cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.
Little Company is currently the only hospital in Chicago and suburbs and only one of three in the state to have these practices. The medical professionals here couldn't be happier.
But these fine folks also want to make clear that even though they are breastfeeding baby friendly, they know it is not for every new mom.
Everyone is welcome and taken care of at Little Company of Mary Hospital.
