(CNS) - Potentially hazardous materials found in a Riverside house led to evacuations today.
According to Riverside police, undisclosed substances that could be explosive were found in a single-story home at 8258 Oakhurst Place, where a man was arrested on suspicion of recklessly discharging a firearm.
William Laurence Hunziker, 46, was arrested about 2 p.m. Tuesday after neighbors called police and reported him shooting into the air.
Hunziker was booked into the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta in lieu of $1 million bail.
"After contacting him, officers went into the house to check the welfare of an elderly woman," Riverside police Lt. Guy Toussaint told City News Service. "In the process of doing a safety sweep of the residence, officers noticed materials in boxes that could be explosive."
The woman, whose relationship to Hunziker could not be confirmed, was removed from home taken elsewhere, Toussaint said.
Riverside police bomb squad investigators were called to the dwelling to conduct a search. After determining that the operation could involve risk to surrounding residences, police, with the assistance of the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, evacuated eight houses this morning, Toussaint told CNS.
"We've got agents going in there with bomb suits ... systematically moving things, slowly making sure the items they're picking up are safe," BATFE Agent Chris Hoffman told reporters at the property.
According to Toussaint, the operation could wrap up tonight or extend into Thursday morning.

By all accounts, Ramon and Janet Barreto are an odd couple, both physically and mentally. The physical part only matters here because we are talking about a couple on the run, fugitives and you need to know what they look like to be on the lookout for them.
