TRENTON, N.J. -
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday released the details of a plan to increase the state's minimum wage by $1.
The proposal comes after Christie vetoed a bill to raise the minimum wage by $1.25.
The governor's office says the plan will work over a phase-in period of three years and is aimed to provide relief to struggling families. The plan also includes a 25 percent increase to the state's Earned Income Tax Credit.
"In these difficult times those most impacted by challenging economic conditions - our state's working families - need assistance," Christie said in a statement.
The governor's office says under the proposal, the state's minimum wage earners would receive an immediate raise of 25 cents per hour in the first year, followed by a 50 cent increase in the second year and then another 25 cent an increase in the third year.
