MILLSBORO, Del. -
What started as a traffic stop Sunday afternoon in Millsboro, Delaware ended up being a large bust for Delaware State Police.
According to troopers, the bust began when a Chevy Malibu was caught making a traffic violation around 2:30 p.m. A trooper turned on the sirens and followed the car, which police say continued westbound on School Lane until it came to a sudden stop in front of Long Neck Elementary School.
At that point, police say a man got out of the car and ran northbound towards a soccer field with a plastic bag in his hand.
The trooper chased the suspect on foot as the Malibu sped away.
Police say as the suspect rounded the northwest corner of the school, he was seen dropping a bag.
The man was taken into custody.
A search of the area behind the school led police to the bag, which investigators say contained 1,252 bags of heroin totaling approximately 31.3 grams. Police say assorted drug paraphernalia was also found in the bag.
The man taken into custody, 22-year-old Derrell D. Gibbs, faces various drug related charges, police said.
Delaware State Police are still searching for the driver of the Malibu.
