Skull & Bones Found In Backyard Of Santa Ana Home

Posted: Updated:
Santa Ana, CA -

Everyone was stunned. No one knew what to make of it: Human bones found in a backyard.

People in the 2500 block of N. Hesperian call it everything from weird to creepy. But, even police don't know what they're dealing with at this point.

On Sunday a new homeowner is doing some landscaping in their backyard with a small tractor and uncovers a human skull and some other bones. He calls Santa Ana police. They turn the area into a crime scene and begin to try and dig up facts. Literally! They bring a coroner's office anthropologist to study the bones as they sift thru backyard dirt to see if they can find more or any clues to explain the grim discovery.

Police tell me this is going to take time. It'll be a meticulous process to go through the approximately 20' x 60' backyard.

Neighbors like Larissa Nieto and her 13 year old daughter Aubrianna call it weird. To Aubrianna it's upsetting. She walks to school by this street every day. To hear human bones are found is scary. She wants to know what happened.

Police are talking to the old owner who lived at the house for 20 years. They're only saying they're talking with him. Next door neighbor Roy Le says his old neighbor was a "nice, intelligent guy." He's shocked by the grim discovery, but doesn't think his old neighbor would have done anything wrong.

Police are also looking into whether a fire back in 2006 might be connected to the discovery of the bones. Roy Le says he recalls it as an accidental fire. He says his neighbor's house had stacks and stacks of newspapers in it which may have fed the flames. But, does that blaze 7 years ago have anything to do with a discovery of bones in the backyard of his next door neighbor's house? That's a question for police.

The investigation continues.

More on the story:

(CNS) Human remains have been found in the backyard of a Santa Ana home being renovated by the current owners. Authorities called to the 25-hundred block of North Hesperian saw a skull and a number of other bones that were dug up.

Santa Ana police officials are waiting for police anthropologists to determine cause of death and if the bones are from a man or a woman. The house where the remains were found burned down in 2006 and was rebuilt.
